Mountainous and hilly terrain introduces constraints that simply do not exist on level ground, and ignoring them is one of the most common causes of slow, expensive and sometimes unsafe stringing work. Here is why the equipment configuration may differ — and what to watch for.

Why Terrain Changes the Equipment

On flat land, a puller faces a fairly predictable load. In hills and mountains, that load is anything but predictable. Five factors drive the difference:

  • Conductor capacity — heavier conductor poses a greater challenge on steep slopes, so the machine's rated conductor capacity must be checked against the gradient.
  • Pulling force — climbing steep spans and hauling over high saddles raises the required force well above a flat-land estimate.
  • Line section — mountainous routes often force shorter, more numerous section lengths, which changes how the puller and tensioner are deployed.
  • Transportability — getting machines up narrow, unpaved access roads may rule out the largest, heaviest units.
  • Live load changes — friction and angle changes across undulating ground make the load vary continuously through the pull.

Conductor Capacity by Terrain

Reputable equipment is usually rated explicitly for different terrains. Machines such as the GS90, GS150 and GS220 distinguish between the conductor sizes they can handle in mountainous and hilly areas versus flat lands, because the effective load in the mountains is higher for the same conductor. Always compare the mountainous rating — not the flat-land figure — when specifying for a hill route.

Practical Selection Tips

Fourth, allow a generous safety margin, since terrain-driven load spikes are hard to predict exactly.

Terrain is not a detail to sort out later — it is a first-order input to equipment selection. Confirm your route profile early, then match the conductor capacity, pulling force, section strategy and transportability to the ground your crews will actually be working on.
